Design briefs
The theme of this year's Interior Motives Design Awards is 'Back to Basics: designing cars for people, not markets'.
Within this overall 2011 theme, students have been tasked with matching one of the following four briefs. Entries must include illustrations and written explanation of how the design works or meets the brief.
Brief 1
Your challenge is to make car design seem exciting to young people once again.
Ask yourself –– how can the way that we interact with and use our vehicles be updated for the 21st century?
Create a vehicle interior that will excite a generation of people under the age of 25 who consider the car to be old-fashioned and completely out-of-date –– who are more interested in using than owning.
Brief 2
Imagine it is the 1960s again. Safety legislation does not yet exist. Neither do airbags or cross-car beams. There is no set volume behind the dashboard to take account of. Design a vehicle with all the freedom in terms of aesthetics and packaging that car designers enjoyed fifty years ago.
The vehicle can be any type or size –– minivan, sports car, estate, supermini, sedan, crossover… whatever inspires you.
Brief 3
The prospect of travelling on planes, buses and trains used to fill people with excitement and anticipation – not dread. Your task is to inject a dose of glamour into this unloved and largely ignored field of vehicle design, and bring it kicking and screaming into the 21st century. Make public transport cool again!
Brief 4
A pure sports car interior (click to view the full brief)
Sports cars today have dramatic, exciting exteriors, yet look very much the same on the inside –– safe, clean, devoid of emotion. Your task is to create a pure sports car interior with true 'wow' factor.
Each part of the interior –– every individual component or element –– should be a work of art or sculpture in its own right. This is your opportunity to focus purely on aesthetics –– a dream come true for any vehicle designer.
The Interior Motives Design Awards 2011 competition is open to students enrolled in a college or university level design programme (either undergraduate or graduate) anywhere in the world.
Along with transportation and product design, entries from students studying fashion, textile and other design courses, as well as those studying design engineering and architecture, are encouraged.
Individuals not enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate degree course at a college or university are not eligible. All projects must be designed/completed during the 2010-11 academic year.
Individual or group entries:
- Individuals and groups (with a maximum of three members) are eligible.
- For group entries, the three participating members must name a nominated leader and point of contact. The group leader is responsible for sharing winnings with the group should a prize be awarded.
- To verify that entrants are bona fide students, the name, email address and contact telephone number for the head of department at the student's college is required.
